NEW RACE DIRECTOR FOR
SAIL TRAINING INTERNATIONAL

Sail Training International has appointed Paul Bishop as Race Director to join the organisation’s expanding Race Directorate team. He will join STI in July and report to the newly appointed Chief Executive, Ross MacDonald.

The STI Race Directorate will comprise two full-time Race Directors, a further part-time Race Director under contract, two full-time support staff and a cadre of volunteer experts in specific functions. Paul Bishop will take over as head of the Race Directorate during 2007, prior to the retirement of the current Race Director Peter Newell (at which point other appointments are likely to be made).

Paul Bishop (46) is currently Business Manager for the UK national sail training organisation ASTO. Prior to this he was Director of the Rona Trust (1995-2004), Operations Manager of the Island Cruising Club (1993-95), and Assistant Race Director of The Tall Ships’ Races (1987-93). Before that he was a professional yachtsman and skipper and has been a frequent competitor in The Tall Ships’ Races. He is a member of the Sail Training International Race Operations Committee, and a Trustee of the James Myatt Memorial Trust. He is also an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean Instructor and Examiner, and is a member of the RYA Yachtmaster Qualification Panel.

“We have an expanding schedule of races for sail training Tall Ships in various parts of the world, building on our international reputation and pre-eminence in organising events such as the annual summer series of The Tall Ships’ Races in Europe which celebrate their 50 th anniversary this year,” says Nigel Rowe, President and Chairman of Sail Training International. “Between now and the end of 2009 we have agreements signed or close to being finalised for nine races involving 35 host ports in close to 20 countries. We are also engaged in early discussion with others to develop new races and events in Asia, South America, South Africa and the Caribbean.”

“This is an exciting time to be joining Sail Training International, to assist in the realisation of its vision and goals for the future, with a particular focus on the personal development of young men and women through sail training,” says Paul Bishop. “Races for Tall Ships add significant value to the sail training experience, with a vital element of healthy competition and promotion of international friendship and understanding.”
