Sail Training International has appointed Ross MacDonald as its first Chief Executive.
Sail Training International is the UK-based charity devoted to the development and education of young people, regardless of their cultural, ethnic or social backgrounds, through sail training internationally. Its members are the national sail training organisations of more than 20 countries in Europe, North America and Australasia. Its activities include the organisation of races and events for sail training Tall Ships and other services to the international sail training community. These include conferences and seminars, research, a range of publications and its Class A Tall Ships Forum devoted to the interests of the world’s big square-rigged sail training Tall Ships.
Ross MacDonald (49) has spent most of his working career with the global consulting firm Accenture plc (formerly Andersen Consulting), of which he became a partner in 1989. He has worked in 25 countries in Europe, the Americas and Asia/Pacific and has lived in France and Malaysia as well as the UK. He retired from Accenture a couple of years ago ‘to regain some personal life’ and decide what to do next. He is married with three children aged 12, 14 and 16. In his youth Ross took part in a number of adventure training programmes. More recently he developed a passion for sailing and sail training. He is a qualified Yacht Master Offshore and has crewed on sail training Tall Ships.
“We created Sail Training International in 2002 and started with nothing. We quickly acquired ownership of The Tall Ships’ Races in Europe, developed other events and programmes, and are now firmly established as ‘the international voice of sail training’. We are well on our way to fulfilling most of the goals of our first five-year plan,” says Nigel Rowe, President and Chairman of Sail Training International. “But our longer term aspirations are far more about new opportunities than any achievement to date. In Ross we have selected a high-calibre chief executive who shares our enthusiasm for what we do as well as our ambitions for the organisation and our impatience to achieve them.”
“Sail Training International has achieved a lot in a few short years with limited resources. I share the organisation’s passion for its purpose and vision for its global development and growth,” says Ross MacDonald. “We know the sail training experience enhances the character, lives and prospects of young people, and there are great opportunities to grow this activity internationally. I look forward to working with the Trustees, Directors and member organisations to ensure Sail Training International meets its full potential.”
