"We have met the enemy and they are ours…" -Commander Oliver Hazard Perry, U.S.N., Battle of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813. This famous dispatch, dashed off within an hour after the great guns fell silent, went on to reference a merchant sloop turned Man-o-War. That sloop was Friends Good Will. The Michigan Maritime Museum is launching a replica of this fateful vessel. Scarano Boatbuilding, Inc. of Albany, New York, designed and built Friends Good Will, to be rigged and sailed by Museum volunteers. The vessel serves as an historic flagship for the preservation of traditional maritime skills. |

The US Brig Niagara was built in 1988 as a reconstruction of the warship aboard which Oliver Hazard Perry won the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813 during the War of 1812. Her mission is to interpret War of 1812 history, promote the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Erie Region, and preserve the skills of square-rig seafaring. The present Niagara has auxiliary power and modern navigation equipment, but lacks modern amenities such as warm water, showers and privacy. She is sailed by a crew of 18-20 professionals supplemented by 20 volunteers willing to live under Spartan conditions such as hammock berthing and living out of a duffel bag. Volunteers do not need to have experience, but a minimum sign-on of three weeks is required. |

The Nina is a historically accurate replica of a 15th century caravel. John Sarsfield, the leading authority on caravels, was designer and builder until his death halfway through the project. Jonathon Nance, a noted British designer and archaeologist, finished the vessel and designed the sail plan and rig. She was built in Valenca, Bahia, Brazil, using only traditional tools and techniques of the 15th century. Her mission today is to educate the public on the “space shuttle" of the 15th century, and over one million students and teachers have visited the Nina since her completion in 1992. |

Originally built in 1947, the Unicorn's hull was crafted from the metals of captured German U-boats salvaged after World War II. The Dutch-built fishing vessel trawled the North Atlantic's fishing grounds for 32 years. In 1999, the vessel was acquired by its current owners, Dawn and Jay Santamaria of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Together with their 4 daughters and professional crew they continue to promote the preservation of traditional maritime life and provide leadership development opportunities to executives, adults and families through sail training programs at sea. The square topsail, gaff rigged schooner has just undergone a complete interior refit and safety and equipment upgrades, making her one of the most beautiful, yet traditional, tall ships in the fleet.
