Picton Castle To Head For Great Lakes

Barque PICTON CASTLE
To Head for Great Lakes This Summer

LUNENBURG, NOVA SCOTIA— The 180-foot sailing ship Barque PICTON CASTLE, just returned from her fourth epic voyage around the world, will visit the Great Lakes in July and August. Sailing from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, in late June 2006, the Picton Castle will take part in the American Sail Training Association's 2006 TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE®, Great Lakes Series. This grand voyage to the heartland of North America takes her up the St. Lawrence River and Seaway and through Lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron, and Michigan. She will return via Prince Edward Island by mid-September.

This famous Class "A" Tall Ship and sail training vessel will be the largest featured vessel at Tall Ships® festivals at Cleveland, Ohio; Bay City and Port Huron, Michigan; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Chicago, Illinois. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to tour the ship during the summer festivals.

She will be crewed by 16 professionals and up to 34 sail trainees, who can join the ship for one or two weeks at a time, or for the entire summer.

“This summer trip is great opportunity to get a taste of shipboard life, learn some mariner's skills, and meet shipmates from the USA, Canada and beyond,” said Captain Daniel Moreland. “We will visit some of the friendliest ports in the world—as well as be part of this remarkable assembly of sailing ships. We welcome as trainees men and women age 15 and up."

Barque PICTON CASTLE trainees need no prior sailing experience. As apprentice deckhands, they learn traditional seafaring skills as they live and work in their own square-rigged tall ship: keeping lookout, handling sail aloft, steering, raising anchor, hauling on lines, and helping in the galley. All hands stand watch underway and in port.

On June 17, 2006, the ship will complete her fourth voyage around the world, having sailed 30,000 miles during nearly 13 months. Her itinerary included Panama, Pitcairn Island, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, Bali, Reunion Island, South Africa, a few Caribbean islands, and Bermuda.
