The American Sail Training Association (ASTA) is looking to bring on three to four summer interns who are interested in working in a unique nonprofit environment. Interns support the staff in various components of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series. This includes assisting with the races, education program, merchandise, marketing and our annual fundraiser. Interns would join ASTA in Newport on May 10, 2007 and will assist the race director and staff in preparing for the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® 2007 Race Series, which starts in May and runs through July. These are high-energy, family-oriented events, bringing majestic tall ships to the waterfronts of several East Coast ports.

Upon the start of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series, interns travel with the Race Team to Charleston, SC and up the East Coast, working at events in the U.S and Canada. The Race Team works with the vessels, crews, trainees, port organizers, US Coast Guard and others to execute a successful series of races and port festivals for traditional sailing ships.  We hope to offer all the interns an opportunity to sail as part of the crew on a tall ship during one of the Race legs. If possible, after the series ends, interns return to Newport, RI for a week to wrap up projects.

Successful candidates will be organized thinkers, motivated workers, enthusiastic learners, confident communicators and mature young adults. Sailing or sail training experience is helpful but not necessary. Aspiring photographers and writers are welcome.

These unique internships are unpaid; however, ASTA covers travel expenses during the event and offers a food allowance when traveling in support of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® 2007 or other ASTA events. We also offer a stipend of $1,000 to each intern, payable in two installments. This summer, the race series begins May 17th in Charleston, SC. Ideally, the interns will meet us in Newport, RI on May 10th. If unable to travel to Newport in time, interns would meet the rest of the team in Charleston on May 15th. Interns are responsible for finding their own way to meet the Race Team, as well as housing in Newport. In the past, we have helped interns find local housing.

If you are interested, you can apply via email to erin@sailtraining.org.   Please include a cover letter, resume and references. Additionally, please submit a brief writing sample, which focuses on what value you would bring to the American Sail Training Association and what you would like to gain from the experience.  Applications must be received by March 16, 2007.

We look forward to receiving your application.
