SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

ASTA is looking to bring on 3-4 summer interns who are interested in working in a unique nonprofit environment. Interns support the staff in various components of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series including public relations, merchandise sales, and education outreach programs.

Interns would join ASTA in Newport on June 10, 2006 and will assist in organizing ASTA’s Annual Fundraiser. Additionally, interns will assist the race director and staff in preparing for the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® 2006 Race Series, which starts in July and runs through early August. These are high-energy, family-oriented events, bringing majestic tall ships to the waterfronts of several North American ports.

Upon the start of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series, interns travel with the Race Team to the Great Lakes, working at events in the US. The Race Team works with the vessels, crews, trainees, port organizers, US Coast Guard and others to execute a successful series of races and port festivals for traditional sailing ships. We hope to offer all the interns an opportunity to sail as part of the crew on a tall ship during one of the Race legs. If possible, after the series ends, interns return to Newport, RI for a week to wrap up projects.

Successful candidates will be organized thinkers, motivated workers, enthusiastic learners, confident communicators and mature young adults. Sailing or sail training experience is helpful but not necessary. Aspiring photographers and writers are welcome.

These unique internships are unpaid; however, ASTA covers travel expenses and offers a food allowance when traveling in support of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® 2006 or other ASTA events. We also offer a stipend of $1,000 to each intern, payable in two installments.

If you are interested, you can apply via email to jonathan@sailtraining.org. Please include a cover letter, resume and references. Additionally, please submit a brief writing sample, which focuses on what value you would bring to the American Sail Training Association and what you would like to gain from the experience.

We look forward to receiving your application.
