Meet the 2005 ASTA Summer Interns!
STEPHEN - RACE INTERN

Stephen

I was homeschooled until I graduated at age sixteen. At seventeen I joined the Army National Guard and served three years as a Forward Observer for Field Artillery. During this time I learned teamwork and motivational skills that I have used to help me succeed and bring me to where I am. I transferred out of the Army National Guard and into the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp (A.F.R.O.T.C.) at the University of Texas at San Antonio. While attending The University of Texas at San Antonio as a senior student, I am earning two bachelors degrees in Political Science and Geography, while minoring in Aerospace Studies. A.F.R.O.T.C. has taught me leadership skills that will help me in both my career and personal life.  Sailing was not an interest of mine until recently when I considered that it was something that I had not done. My search for summer work around the coastal areas and on a vessel led me to find this internship. I am looking forward to learning and using my teamwork and leadership skills as an asset to the American Sail Training Association.

JASON - RACE INTERN

Jason

I am currently completing my Bachelors Degree in Entrepreneurship from Johnson & Wales University located in downtown Providence, Rhode Island.   The course work and experience I have is well suited to the skills and qualifications the ASTA internship demands.

I have been working with small cap companies since my mid teens when I started my first company at the age of 16 which motivated me to start my second company that I later incorporated in the state of Texas.   I am well versed in organizational structure as well as management operations.

LAURA - EDUCATION INTERN
Laura

I am a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, having studied Fine Art and Anthropology. I studied abroad in Shanghai, China, and will begin graduate school in Archaeology at Cambridge in the fall.

My absolute favorite thing to do is travel, and I have been fortunate enough to travel to four continents thus far. I also enjoy photography, reading, spending time with family and friends, and trying new things (like sailing on tall ships!). I am enthusiastically looking forward to working this coming summer as ASTA's TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Pacific Coast Race Series Educational Intern!"

CHRISTINE - MARKETING AND MEDIA INTERN

Christine

As the second child in the Jacobson family I was gifted with the name of Christine. Since birth only lofty thoughts have passed through my head, i.e. pink or purple barrette, grape or strawberry jelly, and most recently thoughts of my impending entrance into the ‘real world.' A senior at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, I will be graduating in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. As a musicology major I wrote my senior thesis on Sea Shanties, which, contrary to popular belief, are not rickety shacks on the ocean, rather work songs from the 19th century tall ships. Lyrical bassoon playing, the handbell choir I started sophomore year, and general hilarity are other assets I bring to the music department. My time outside the music building is spent knitting fiendishly, reading Harry Potter and humming “What Would You Do With A Drunken Sailor” under my breath. Hailing from a town just south of Seattle, Washington I am excited to see the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® on the west coast this year. While I have never been tall ship sailing I do enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean and Master and Commander, and hope to be able to say more than that by the end of the summer!
